Extreme Makeover Cynisism

I truly enjoy the show - I have changed my purchasing habits to use companies such as Sears who support the show. But I find myself becoming more cynical, and I predicted this to a co-worker.

"The University of Toledo is offering full scholarships for all 11 boys — with a potential value of more than $250,000 — and Lourdes College will give scholarships of $2,000 per year, per child, renewable for four years."

UT - A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY - funded by TAXES - giving away 11 scholarships based solely on the fact that these children made it on TV!!! This I have a problem with. Lourdes College- GREAT - private university. Private citizens or private companies raising or donating a fund for college - EVEN BETTER. But, for UT to give these scholarships to these 11 kids is improper.

Come all ye haters and attackers - I know your out there. It is situations like this which pit my human sympathy and empathy against my political ideology and economic philosophy which make for the best debate.

You aren't the only one. Where were all these companies who donated yesterday....restaurants, flowers, credit unions, etc.etc. all the years the family has been struggling? Without the free mentions they disappear into the woodwork. Why not donate some of that stuff to the four families that didn't get chosen?

I also agree (as I shield myself from the bricks thrown my way). That was my first thought when I heard of UT's generous donation of my/our money. Great for the kids/family, not so much for us. They have no right to give away money that belongs to us.

TAHL,

My cynicism was also piqued by this generousity. This did appear to be a worthy family, but I am sure that there are many others in the city, some of whom did not just receive a new house.

I guess that we shouldn't be surprised that UT has jumped on the bandwagon of spending OPM, as universities are traditionally bastions of liberal thinking. Besides, they are probably looking for positive spin after turning down the Mayor and Mr Block on the United Way building.

UT ; free-ride ; WHY?

That pisses me off!

I don't know, I don't think you'll get many haters on this one. I'm with you. Tax funds, directly or indirectly should never be used for something like this. What BS!

There are 1000s of kids and families worthy of that grant, but they won't see it because it doesn't work like that. The show itself should have funded this, they make millions off of it!

I got tired of the show after a while, when I noticed that each episode was just a 1upper to the last one. Like, okay, we found a family with 4 disabled kids, a single parent and a broken down house... then the next one, 4 disabled kids, plus an autistic baby, a quadrapeligic single dad and a mom that raises all of them and also donates time to her church. Then the next episode seems to somehow 1up that! (these are all of course made up but I'm sure you can relate and know what I'm talkin about)

Its sad & troublesome that people find themselves in situations like that of course, and I have compassion for them, but I have to question the show simply because of its sensationalist approach.
